Oh this is Faris (yes, it's a Arabic name lol ), hopefully my last original character...I'm splitting 4 into a near future setting and two into a historic setting- probably time and place of the second Persian Empire. I'm not attempting to be historically accurate but I will do research-

The idea started with the falcon, called a 'white gyr' (I'm pretty sure it's not a species but a particular breed-). Then I wikipedia-ed falconry and found out it had origins in China and Mongolia. I used personal background knowledge of traditional Chinese and Mongolian dress (I can thank my dad's dramas for that) and as I was also procrastinating on Studies of Religion, I also did research into Bedouin culture.

And looking back at this pro guy the whole time.

I haven't been producing things that I'm really satisfied lately with latelyI'm also considering joining a role-play group on deviantart. hehe

But there are so many other good character designs! At least I won't have a problem with the personality/bio descriptions...I think. It was funny how many people had characters that were "super-smart, badass fighters and good singers" (if girls) or "artistic, good at baking and smart-" (if guys). Oh, and they have to be good singers too.

I'll stick with a male fighter type. There's not enough of them hahahaaa

I finally took a commission. The girl has the best character designs ever. So I'm taking more effort to make it nice...so I tried a few ideas



I was at chatime...watching those asian music videos that they always have on the TV. I can't really agree with the style or the quality of the singers, but at least they were well dressed. The spotlight made a cool reflection off her sequin jacket onto her face. So decided to draw it. Haven't got far yet. Got better at faces looking up

Not really. I tried to draw a "pretty boy". I don't think the guys I usually draw are really that manly, but I've been told so (hey ask k-pop and anime land how they like their boys), so I decided to do something different. It's based off my gaia avatar, which ironically enough, is on a female base because I can't be bothered to change it.
Umm yeah...one down, 3-ish projects to go.

oh before I go, there's a char concept sketch. She's changed so many times, I think I need to ditch the hair colour just to suit. hmmmmm

I ranted about it to Jo and Debs today, so I'm pretty sure they're not gonna appreciate me *complaining* about it.

Late last year when I picked up art seriously again, my goal was to get my backgrounds and colouring really up to standard. I think I forgot and went a bit beyond. I getting more confident, and I developed a technique that allowed me to paint fast, jumping from rough sketch to colour...because I merged the two in the early stages...scribble and blobs indicated figure instead of lines.
Now that's cool if you're photo-referencing closely (where I picked it up from) or if you actually have any trace of a rough sketch/lineart beforehand...but for the sake of speed, accuracy was lost (I hate how maths gets into art, "don't skip steps" my maths teacher says)

Time to take a break from it all I guess. What annoys me the most is because I know what I'm doing wrong, and how to fix it. I'm half-expecting my old art teacher John to leap out of the closet to say "I told you!" I realised this formally when I got a kind nudge from another artist...hahaha. I was so pleased with the picture, I posted it straight away, only to return half an hour later ready to tear my hair out...in such a short time, I could already point out the mistakes clearly. The (editted) picture is at the bottom.

More studies for me.Even back to drawing fruit if I have to. And actually doing lineart, which I haven't done properly in almost two years. It's the last picture of this phase (hopefully). hehe

uhhh...what's coming? I'm planning to challenge myself. I still have one old project to finish, and two to start. A male portrait cause I'm still bad at it and another attempt at a combat scene? And inevitably, if I want to make characters, I need reference sheets for all 5 of them. I noticed how I kept changing the appearance when I had to fish out some pictures for a gaia commissioner.

And then there's school life to deal with too. Ahhh...my brain is not going to cope.
